We are looking east across a space witch has been an open square longer than tradition can reach. "How many times has grain benn sold here, as we see men selling it now ! Note the man near us buying grain, the good measure he is getting, the grain being pressed down and running over. It is an ancient custom her in the East to give the man who buys every kernel he can make lie on the measure.... "And it shall be given into you, good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over, shall men give unto your bosom."... "That building beyond is of deep interest, for many believe, and with some reson. that it stands over the very place where our Divine Teacher and Saviour was born. The church stands at the centre, flanked by threee monasteries, two of which we see, one on the left and the other extending towards us on the right. It is thought that the centre structure is the one erected here in the year 320 by the Emperor Constantine; at any rate this is an example of the earliest Christian style of architecture. According to Jerome, who lived her shortly after its construction, this church was undoubtedly built upon the site of the Bethlehem Kahn or inn. The Kahns on ancient caravan routes were situated at certain fixed places and held their positions for centuries, so it is very possible that th Kahn spoken of by Jerome was in the very same place as the one to which Joseph and Mary came." (See "Travelling in the Holy Land through the Stereoscope" with keyed maps locating all the standpoints taken and identifying the landmarks.)
