33310 ONE OF THE ELIGHTFUL WALKS ALONG THE BIARRITZ SHORE France seems to epitomize all of the most attractive features to be found on the continent of Europe. It is eminently picturesque, with each province expressing a different interest. As a nation, hospitable and sociable, it has attracted a large following to the many watering places that abound on its extensive coasts. One of the most interesting of these for sightseeing travelers lies on the Atlantic shore on the Bay of Biscay. "The winds are rude in Biscay's sleepless bay," said Byron. But today we find them kind. It is a summer day and they play only mildly with France's banners that fly about the War Memorial at Biarritz. The deep blue waters of the Atlantic are also more quiet than usual. Near the shore you will note the water is dotted with sharp, wave-worn rocks. This rocky coast at Biarritz is peculiar. The constant force of wind and water against the high cliffs has so worn and cut the sharp coast line that great rock forms in lateral masses rise from the waters edge as though scattered by some giant hands. Some of the larger of them have been connected with the mainland by foot bridges providing interesting promenades, and on days when the winds blow hard and the waves dash madly up on the shore it is a thrilling experience to stand upon one of these rock promenades that extend into the bay. It is the charm and beauty of Biarritz that is responsible for its existence as a resort. It early found favor with royalty and today its excellent hotels and two casinos provide for a large follow. ing. Its shops are wonderful and tempting. Le monument au mort a été construit en 1922. Il s'agit d'un cénotaphe et l'on distingue une sirène sur le dessus qui représente la ville de Biarritz. Celle ci semble avoir rapidement été supprimée, en 1928 comme nous l'indique les recherches sur les monuments aux morts menées par l'université de Lille. (voir bibliographie) La passerelle qui mène au rocher de la Vierge était à l'origine en bois, sous Napoléon III, mais elle a été abimée par une tempête et remplacée par une métallique qui vient d'ateliers dans le Nord de la France, qui collaboraient certainement avec Gustave Eiffel ... mais l'implication d' Eiffel pour cette passerelle reste controversé. Il existe une vue plus globale de Georges Lewis du monument aux morts et du rocher de la Vierge mais rien ne peut affirmer qu'il est l'auteur de cette vue là. (Voir Bibliographie)
