29643 THE WALLS AND TOWERS OF CARCASSONE, FRANCE "I see full well that here below Bliss unalloyed there is for none; My prayers would else fulfillment know— Never have I seen Carcassone!" Now if, like in the poem by Nadaud, this has been your wish, too, here is fulfillment for before you rise the walls and towers of the Cite, or old tower of Carcassone. In the summer of 1927 it celebrated its 2,000th birth- day, a record not many towns can claim; and it is quite certain it is much older even than twenty centuries for excavations have proved that from the earliest times there has been a town of some sort here. To reach it you must first pass through the Ville Basse, or Lower Town, founded in 1240. Carcassone, one of the finest examples in all the world of a medieval fortified city, was early an important outpost of Rome. Laid waste by the Goths, fortifications were built by the Visigoths in the 5th Century on the foundations of the old Roman walls. There are two encircling walls, or double lines of fortifications, surmounted by not less than fifty-four massive round towers. Previous to the 14th century the fortifications were frequently reconstructed or altered and were restored by the architect Viollet-le-Duc in 1850-1879. Within the walls there is a diminutive city of about 1,000 people that boasts of a modern and extremely comfortable hotel. There is also a church, formerly a cathedral, and the citadel is now used as a barracks. Once an impregnable fortress, Carcassone no longer frowns. It is now like a dream city from an enchanted land, one of the glory spots of France. It is romantic and superbly beautiful. Copyright by The Keystone View Company

La cité fortifiée de Carcassonne, édifiée sur un promontoire élevé, est un ensemble médiéval unique en France par ses dimensions, entièrement restauré par Viollet-le-Duc entre 1851 et 1865, dont le classement s’est étalé entre 1862 et 1942. Une portion des murailles remonte au Ve siècle, sans doute à la suite du passage des Wisigoths. Le château date des XIe et XIIe siècles. La porte Narbonnaise et toute la partie méridionale de l'enceinte intérieure, ainsi que le couronnement des tours, ont été construits au XIIe siècle, après que le dernier vicomte de Carcassonne eut abandonné ses droits seigneuriaux à Saint-Louis en 1247. L'enceinte extérieure paraît être peu postérieure à ces dernières constructions. La ville est ceinturée par deux enceintes concentriques, séparées par un terre-plein appelé « les Lices ». En ce mois de mai 1934, le photographe et sa famille visitent le site : les deux garçons au premier plan en font partie.
