33309 THE BEAUTIFUL JARDIN DE LA FONTAINE, NIMES Because of the great number of relics of Roman times possessed by the city of Nimes, it is especially attractive to tourists and students and entertains each year many travelers from all parts of the world. In the northwest part of the city is the so-called Temple of Diana and the Roman baths of which only the ruins remain. Near these Roman ruins is a spring and fountain from which the beautiful garden before us derives its name, Jardin de la Fontaine, or garden of the fountain. The garden itself, as we see it today, was constructed in the 18th century. However, the balustrades and statues are placed on ancient foundations. The public baths and the Temple of Diana were built by Agrippa, who also built the aqueduct of the Pont du Gard near Nimes. The spring that supplies the water for the fountain is copious enough, after heavy rains, to not only fill the ornamental basins of the park before us, but also to form a considerable stream. The water flows into a series of basins, forming a beautiful water garden eifect. The whole area is of great magnificence and extent and is thickly planted with shade trees. From the middle walk of the garden extends a beautiful avenue, the Boulevard de la Republique, which runs south for nearly a mile. The modern Nimes is the seat of a bishop and an important commercial center of south- ern France. It has several educational institutions including schools of music and art. The quarries of hard limestone nearby which furnished the Romans the material for their buildings are still there and on occasion still worked. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
