Texte au verso

24832 OLD BRIDGE AT AVIGNON, FRANCE Lat. 44° N.; Long, 5 E. The river before us is the Rhone, flowing southward on its placid way to the Mediterranean Sea. The old bridge which partially spans its current was built in the 12th century, in stern, hard days when men built such structures for use alone, scorning ornamentation. It offers a vivid contrast to the two handsome bridges which now cross to the right bank of the river, the newest on solid arches supported by stone piers. On one of the piers of the old bridge we catch a glimpse of the ancient Chapel of Saint Benedict, long the shrine of devout worshippers. It brings to mind the days in which the popes reigned in this old city. In fancy one sees long lines of guards drawn up before the papal palace to receive distinguished prelates of the church; squadrons of knights on prancing horses; halberdiers with heavy axes on their shoulders marching before and behind the prefusely decorated closed coaches used by royalty and nobility in those days. The battlements of solid tower in the immediate foreground form part of the fortifications built by these same popes and testify to their power and influence. Avignon lies in the midst of a fertile country and does a very considerable trade in the products of the region. Its climate is that of the south, but the mistral, that cold north wind which raises clouds of choking, blinding dust and which chills to the bone, descends frequently upon it and makes life a burden to its inhabitants.
