Texte au verso

33306 ON A RIVIERA TERRACE, NICE In all the world there is no play place to equal that section of the Mediterranean shore their height. that extends from Cannes in France, to Genoa in Italy, the Riviera. Everyone would like to visit it, especially the city of Nice, by common consent the Riviera's most delightful winter resort. Here man has embellished nature by beautiful flower gardens, perfect roads, handsome villas, and magnificent casinos. Most of the buildings are of glistening white marble quarried from nearby hills. Thousands or visitors come to Nice in the winter season where they find a climate that is mild and salubrious, with snow almost un- known. The Alps Mountains toward the north and the Appenines in Italy help to protect it from the cold winds of northern Europe. Palm trees are numerous and they give a faint suggestion of the Orient. Boating, bathing and golfing are popular pastimes, and during carnival time, an annual event, festivities are at Nice also has a history. Its harbor has been used for more than twenty-three hundred years. It was a prosperous port long before the Christian era. Greek ships like those described in the Odyssey have anchored here and Roman galleys have sought its haven from Mediterranean storms. Fleets of Saracenic invaders have landed hostile soldiers at Nice's harbor and in the Middle Ages the town possessed a fortified chateau. Although a pleasure resort Nice enjoys a high degree of commercial activity. On the hill slopes are orchards of mulberry, orange, olive, fig, peach, almond, and lemon trees, and Italian and French vessels carry the city's trade to all parts of the coast.
