33305 MONTE CARLO ON THE RIVIERA This famous Mediterranean gambling resort is situated in southeastern France in the principality of Monaco, the smallest state in Europe. Monaco's area is only eight square miles, and its population 24,000. Besides Monte Carlo, the little realm contains the two towns of Condamine and Monaco with populations respectively of 11,000 and 2,000. Monaco is a little peninsula standing 200 feet above the sea and has been known to history for nearly 2,500 years. Ever since the Middle Ages it has been a fortified place. The Saracens took Monaco but they were driven out in the 14th century by a Genoese prince named Grimaldi, and his descendants have ever since been reigning princes, sometimes under an appointed protectorate of some other nation, but now for many years independent. The department of customs and the postal service are entrusted to French management. The standing army consists of only five officers and seventy men. The running expenses of the government, including the maintenance of the church, are met by special apportionments of the profits from the games. The gambling institution, housed in the Casino is operated by a private corporation. Besides a huge rental, this company pays all the government expenses of Monaco. It also pays pensions to once wealthy men who have lost their fortunes at the tables, and it advances money to losers who cannot pay their way home. The laws of Monaco forbid its citizens to participate at the gaming tables. None but visitors are permitted to gamble. The public gardens on the brow of the cliff-like hill give magnificent views up and down Monaco's irregular shore. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
Analyse du document
La vue a été prise depuis la place du Casino vers les montagnes. La végétation a beaucoup changée et la densité des constructions également, mais on reconnait la forme de la montagne.
