33303 THE FACADE OF THE ORLEANS CATHEDRAL Orleans shares with Rouen the chief honors of association with Joan of Arc and the anniversary of the Maid's raising of the Siege of Orleans, in 1429, is always celebrated with much ceremony. At the time that event took place in the history of France, there had already been a cathedral in Orleans for many years. Begun in 1287, it was destroyed by the Hugenots in 1567. In the period between 1601 and 1829, was erected the present structure which is the only Gothic Cathedral in Europe built since the Middle Ages. The general plan is that of a Latin cross, the west end terminating in three portals. It is this façade we see. Those lofty towers that terminate in crownshaped galleries are 285 feet high. The first sections of the towers are square, the second octagonal and the top round. The Cathedral is the principal building in Orleans and one of the finest Gothic structures in France. Orleans is a very old town. It was besieged by Attila in 450, and in the Middle Ages was the occasional residence of the kings of France. In English History it is chiefly known by the memorable siege which it sustained against the English. On the 29th of April, in 1429, the celebrated Joan of Arc threw herself, with supplies, into Orleans, and from the 4th to the 8th of May made such successful sallies upon the besiegers they were compelled to raise the siege. While the chief interest in Orleans lies in its historical associations, it also has some commercial importance. Situated on the Loire, it has long been a point of communication between the Loire basin and the city of Paris. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
