Texte au verso

V24822 CHARTRES AND ITS GLORIOUS CATHEDRAL, FRANCE Lat. 48° N.; Long, 2 E. Even at a distance one can see that this glorious cathedral is worthy of its fame. It is one of the most imposing ecclesiastical buildings in France. Admirably situated on the summit of a hill, its fine lines and exquisite decorations can be seen to the best advantage. The loftiest of those two beautiful and graceful spires rears its pinnacle to a height of 400 feet. One would like to be nearer to see the wonderful stained glass windows for which the cathedral is noted, some of them dating from the 13th century, and to observe close at hand the sculptures, which every visitor to Chartres (shȧr‘tr’) climbs the hill to see. Chartres is an old, old city, one of the most ancient in France. Burgundians and Normans have fought under its walls. Henri IV captured it in 1591 and came there to be crowned three years later. In 1870 the city wes seized by the German army, which made it the base of its operations against the army of the Loire (lwȧr). The city is about 50 miles southwest of Paris, and is the capital of the department Eure-et-Loire, with a population of about 25,000 souls. Many of its streets are steep. for the city is built on the side of a hill overlooking the river Loire, one channel of which flows inside and the other outside of a broad boulevard which marks the site of the ancient ramparts. Chartres is a great cattle market, and immense quantities of grain from all parts of the department find their way to the city. The great cathedral is not the only object of interest to tourists; the church of St. Pierre is well worthy of a visit and the many quaint houses with their gabled windows and enormous timbers are extremely picturesque.
