V24650 WALL-GIRT ISLAND OF MONT ST. MICHEL This historic rock, one of the most picturesque spots in Europe, lies in the English Channel, nearly a mile off the north coast of France. At low tide as we see it now, one can walk along the base of the strong wall which in ancient times defended it from attack by sea; but when the tide comes in, which it does with great speed and fury, the rock, except for the causeway to the left which con- nects it with the ancient coast department of Manche (mänsh), is completely surrounded. This rock has been a sacred spot from the earliest times, even before Richard I, Duke of Normandy, founded a Benedictine monastery on its summit in the 10th century. After the conquest of England by the Normans much rich spoil its way to that monastery in the form of devotional or propitiatory gifts. In those stern days wealth had to be held by a strong hand and the towers and battlements which surround the islet were often manned by resolute monks and their warlike adherents. At all times, through wars and rumors of wars, pilgrims from Italy and England and other parts of Europe, as well as from France, found their way hither. The old monastery has disappeared and on the site which it once occupied stands this beautiful and famous abbey, dating from the 13th century, and known throughout the whole of Europe as an example, in some of its parts, of the finest Gothic architecture. The cloister, with its pointed arcades and slender columns, is admired by all who are fortunate enough to see it, and the Knights' Hall with its vaulted ceiling and rows of cylindrical pillars impresses everyone with its grandeur. The rock is almost completely covered with buildings of one kind or another, among them a number of very old houses including one said to have been built by Bertrand du Guesclin, that doughty hero of the middle ages and inveterate hater of the English.
