Texte au verso
29647 THE SPIRES FROM THE HEART OF OLD ROUEN, FRANCE Although its old ramparts have been converted into broad boulevards and the newer quarters are regularly built and contain fine modern dwellings, Rouen—the capital of the Department of Seine-Inferieure, in northern France—still retains much of its medieval atmosphere in its crooked, picturesque streets and its many old houses with their quaint gables and carved timbers. Its chief sights are confined to a small area around its famed cathedral whose three towers rise high above the roof tops before us. The construction of the Cathedral of Notre Dame lasted from the beginning of the 13th century, after the burning of the previous lace. cathedral, until the beginning of the 16th century. The central tower, the one seen at the right. is nearly 500 feet high, the tallest spire in. France. The one seen in the center is the north or left tower. This is the tower Saint-Romain. When the old church was burned in 1200, this tower, which had been built filty years before, was saved in part. As you can see, it differs much from the third or south tower seen at the extreme leit. This south tower is the Tour de Beurre. It has been thus oddly named because the funds for its building were given in return for the permission to eat butter in Lent. This tower is Norman aml of stonework so delicate it has been likened to These contrasted towers are the most striking features of Notre Dame's west façade. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
