29607 THE CHURCH OF THE SACRE-COEUR. PARIS, FRANCE In the northern part of Paris is a hill famous in the history of the city. It witnessed the struggle between the French troops and the Russian Allies in 1814 and it played an important part in the sieges of 1870-71. According to tradition, St. Denis, the first bishop of Paris. suffered martyrdom here in 270, hence it is said the name came from Mons Martyrum. Others, however, have it that the name was derived from Mons Martis because at one time a temple of Mars stood upon the hill. It is the highest point of land within the city's boundaries and to drive in an open taxi up the Butte Montmartre and around the top of the hill is a delightful experience. From the crest you can command a most superb view of Paris. The altitude of Paris varies between 80 feet at the exit of the Seine and 420 feet at Montmartre. One of the most remarkable churches erstel in the 19th century is situated on to the hill. It was begun in the early eighties from designs by Paul Abadie. It was completed at. great cost. Romanesque in style and of monu- mental solidity, it is topped by Byzantine domes. There is also a belfry in which hangs the huge bell known as "Savoyarde." This bell, which was presented by the diocese of Savoy, weighs between 17 and 18 tons and is the greatest bell in France. The slopes of Montmartre have been laid out as public gardens with huge supporting walls erected to retain the necessary soil. These walls add attractive features to the setting from above which rises the beautiful church of Sacré-Coeur (sacred heart). Nous sommes dans la rue de Steinkerque qui permet d'avoir une vue sur la butte de Montmartre et de profiter de la vue sur le Sacré-Cœur. Les boutiques de la rue sont visibles, une propose des moulages d'art et l'autre des souvenirs et des images religieuses, on distingue le présentoir à cartes postales. En face, c'est un café , et un bar, le Lutterbach, qui servait de la bière d'Alsace et du cidre visiblement. Sur le trottoir en face, on voit des étals, peut être un glacier...
