1636 HALL OF THE CARYATIDES FROM THE SALLE DU TIBRE IN THE LOUVRE With the Tuilleries, the Louvre covers nearly fifty acres and is one of the most splendid palaces in the world. It takes two hours to walk through its numerous rooms, without stopping. Its museums contain the most valuable collections in the world, and they are constantly being increased by purchase and gifts and bequests. The miserable mob that destroyed the best part of the Tuilleries in 1871, would have burned the Louvre as well had not the Versailles troops arrived in the nick of and restored order. The sculptures, ancient and modern, are on the ground floor, in different halls and galleries. We are in the Hall of The Tibre looking through the Hall of The Caryatides, so called from the caryatides at the end. It was in this hall Henry IV celebrated his marriage with Margaret of Valois, and here his body, or an effigy was placed after his assassination. The first statue in the Hall of the Caryatides is Hercules with his son, Telephus, and the hind by which the boy was suckled. Farther on is the head of the Jupiter of Versailles, one of the most impressive of ancient statues. Demosthenes and Alexander the Great mingle with Mercury and Apollo and Bacchus and Minerva, Diana and Venus. There is also a splendid bust of Sophocles, the face that of an elderly and thoughtful man of noble fea- tures and great beauty, with an expression of patience and sorrow befitting the Greek Jeremiah. The statue immediately before us is Diana the Huntress, or Diana of Versailles. It is also sometimes known as Diana of the Hind. It stands in the Hall of the Tibre.
