24818 CATHEDRAL OF NOTRE DAME, PARIS, FRANCE Standing on a bridge spanning the Seine at the Rue des Deux Ponts we obtain this view of the famous cathedral, preferable in the minds of many to that from the front. We miss the beautiful facade it is true, but we obtain a better idea of the harmonious proportions of this glorious edifice, and catch more than a glimpse of the handsome rose window in the transept. In the rear of the cathedral we see the tall trees of a quiet garden too often missed in the mad haste of tourists to rush from one sight to another. There one may sit on a plain wooden bench under the shade of trees, inhale the fragrance of flowers, and, cut off from the noisy bustle of the city by the Seine, which flows on either side of the island upon which the cathedral is built, fall into silent meditation inspired by the history of the great cathedral close at hand. There is no church in France with greater historical associations. How many men whose names adorn the pages of history have passed through its portals! How many surging mobs in the dark days of the Revolution have trampled upon the ground at our feet! Princes and potentates have heard mass within its walls, have married and intermarried at its altar; fishmongers, sculliery maids, and rabble from the slums have shaken clenched fists and bawled obscene oaths at this glorious building, the symbol of religious life. There are other beautiful churches in Paris but none so near the heart of the people, none so closely linked by history and tradition to the life of the city, none which has such an appeal to visitors from other lands.
