V 24806 INTERIOR OF CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES, PARIS Lat. 49° N.; Long. 2° E. The auditorium before us is often the scene of violent political controversies. Nearly 600 deputies, called from all parts of France, assemble there to legislate on national affairs. There are several political groups, united when the interests of the country are menaced, but with divergent views at other times, and the debates are often acrimonious. The assembly hall is semicircular in form, the public galleries behind the marble columns to be seen in the background. Behind the tribunal hangs a beautiful piece of Gobelins tapestry. The decorations of the hall are in exquisite taste, simple yet elegant. The Chamber of Deputies, begun in 1722 and enlarged later at an expenditure of over $3,000,000 is commandingly situated on the south bank of the Seine, at the juncture of the Quai D'Orsay and the boulevard St.-Germain. At a short distance to the north on the Quai d'Orsay is the magnificent Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a building which bustled with activity during the deliberations of the Peace Conference which followed the World War. France is governed by a constitution and, in addition to the Chamber of Deputies, there is also a Senate. The two Chambers meet each year and must remain in Session for at least five months. The executive head of the govern- ment is the President, chosen not by popular vote but by joint assembly of the two Cham- bers. He serves seven years and can be reelected but no President has as yet served two full terms. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
