3100 RECEPTION ROOM OF CATHERINE DE MEDICI, FONTAINEBLEAU The Palace of Fontainebleau typifies admirably two of the outstanding characteristics of the French people their love for beauty and elegance. It is situated thirty-seven miles from Paris and was built or the site of a previous royal residence, by Francis I about 1535. Henry IV made additions which doubled its area, and Napoleon I spent 6,000,000 francs in restoring it. The various buildings are said to cover an area of 14 acres ; the buildings do not rise above two stories, and their splendor lies in their elegant and elaborate interior decorations and furniture. The reception room which we see now was occupied by the beautiful, brilliant, intriguing Catherine de Medici. In 1812-1814 Pope Pius VII was detained as a state prisoner at Fontainebleau by Napoleon, who allowed him the use of these elegant apartments. Francis II, son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici, was born at Fontainebleau ; he was married to Mary Stuart, queen of Scotland, in 1558, but he died in 1560. During his brief reign Catherine de Medici, accompanied by 150 beautiful maids of honor, received here the embassy of the Catholic sovereigns calling for enforcement of the decrees of the Council of Trent and renewed persecution of Protestants. Here also Napoleon's sentence of divorce was pronounced against Josephine, and here he signed his abdication of the imperial crown. Fontainebleau shared with Versailles, which is nearer the gay metropolis, the honor of sheltering France's royal families whenever they desired to leave their regal establishments in Paris. At present there is at Fontainebleau a city of some 15,000 inhabitants, a military school for engineers and artillerymen. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
