29638 CHATEAU-THIERRY OF TODAY We are looking south over Chateau-Thierry from the ramparts of the Old Chateau. But how different its appearance from that during those unforgettable days of June and July in 1918. The Germans constantly bombarded that part of the town south of the river which was held by the Americans and the French, while the latter, much as they regretted the necessity, similarly shelled the northern part. The banks of the Marne, where they extended through this pleasant little city and through Belleau Wood a few miles to the northwest, marked the high tide of Germany's last desperate plunge toward Paris. Should you care to know what Chateau-Thierry looked like at that time, there is a record, unchangeable and true, which will bring you face to face with that war-wrecked city of fourteen years ago. It is a stereograph taken from the same position as this vie[w.] Looking down the main street of the city, renamed the Rue due Marechal Petain, in honor of the commanding general of the French armies, you can see the new bridge across the Marne erected in 1924 to replace the more hastily built structure of steel and wood which the American engineers constructed in that memorable July of 1918. Though hurriedly built, it was sturdy, and served the town for six years as the principal crossing of the river. Beyond the thoroughfare at the right, the Marne reflects the rebuilt substantial houses which stood half in ruins back in 1918, From these ruins hid- den American machine guns spat their deadly fire to prevent the Germans from crossing to the south bank and here our troops hurled back the last forward rush of the Germans and began the great push that ended in victory. Chateau-Thierry and the banks of the Marne are sacre ground to all Americans. [Co]pyright by Keystone View Company.
