3194 THE LIEUT. QUENTIN ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN, CHAM- ERY, FRANCE When only twenty, during the World War, Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest of Theodore Roosevelt's children, became one of that courageous company of airmen, who fought eagerly, gayly, impetuously in a righteous cause. He was a lieutenant in the 95th American Aero Squadron, First Pursuit Group. One day while high up in the blue over the fighting line he "finally went out on his last patrol, to his rendezvous with death." He fell in single combat with a more experienced adversary at Chamery, near Reims, on July 14th, Although new to the flying game, he had but three days before won the Croix de Guerre by a daring exploit typical of the man. A lonely grave on a broad plain near the spot where he fell is his last resting place. There are forest trees near by and a handsome monument marks the grave. The French keep his grave and monument beautifully decorated, and as a further mark of respect there has been erected in the village of Chamery beneath the shade of the willows this finely-proportioned memorial fountain. It is situated on the road from Chateau-Thierry to Reims and offers of its refreshing waters to peasant and traveler alike. Here a peasant couple have stopped on their way home from the fields with their bundle of fresh-cut clover. The man with his scythe and cradle waits until the woman fills her large cruche or pitcher with water to take to their small cottage home in preparation of the simple evening meal. L'inscription sous la tête de lion de la fontaine indique : "ONLY THOSE ARE FIT TO LIVE WHO ARE NOT AFRAID TO DIE" THEODORE ROOSEVELT Quentin Roosevelt est le dernier fils de Theodore Roosevelt (Président des USA entre 1901 et 1909)et le lointain cousin de Franklin Delano Roosevelt qui sera président des USA de 1932 à 1945. Il était aviateur lors de la Première Guerre mondiale.
