29637 VERDUN REBUILT Many events have taken place at Verdun and many armies have marched upon it. events of its past, nor all of them together, have endowed it with the immortal fame which it earned in its triumphant struggles against its assailants of 1914-1918. Its name has become. one of the most sacred to France and the grati- tude of many people has been joined to that of France in tribute to the men who throughout the first half of 1916 barred the path of the invaders. "Ils ne passeront pas," —they shall not pass—was the proud watchword of the French infantry, and they kept their word. The holding of Verdun cost hundreds of thousands of lives. In this view we are looking nearly west across the Meuse River over what was the medieval quarter of Verdun. This part of the city was considerably damaged by the German bombardment and many buildings entirely destroyed. There is a stereoscopic record made from this same viewpoint which shows you Verdun after But no its bombardment. For months, more than two hundred thousand shells a day rained on Verdun and its neighboring forts, and there were many days when eight hundred shells struck within the city alone. The masonry of the river em- bankment and all the buildings in the foreground are new. The cathedral which you see in the distance was considerably damaged but has been repaired. Walls dating back to the middle ages and hidden and forgotten for centuries were exposed to view. At the end of the war, the Meuse-Argonne battle, troops of the first American Army had the privilege of fighting before Verdun, forc- ing the enemy back and away from the north and east of this heroic fortress city. Analyse du document

La ville de Verdun a beaucoup souffert de la Première guerre Mondiale et cette photographie permet de se rendre compte des reconstructions. La cathédrale est encore en partie en travaux comme nous le montrent les échafaudages sur le chevet.
