Texte au verso

W24553 THE STATUE OF GUTENBERG, GUTENBERG PLATZ, STRAS- BOURG, FRANCE If you have not a clear idea of the location of Alsace-Lorraine, you will find it interesting to study a map of Europe. Formerly a German province, since the World War Alsace-Lorraine has been a part of France. It is a bit of the most debated ground in the entire continent of Europe. Germanic tribes fought here against the Roman Legions almost sixteen hundred years ago and all through the Middle Ages, France and Germany quarrelled over this same territory. The present boundary between Germany and France as established since the World War is the Rhine River. The city of Strasbourg was colonized by the Romans. It was a free town at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Then its rulers changed back and forth with the varying fortunes of war. From 1681 to 1871 it was a French town. Then came the Franco-Prussian War with the crash at Sedan, and, by the terms of Peace of Frankfort, the city went back once more into the possession of Germany. It is now the eleventh city in size in France with a population of over 181,000. It is important commercially. Tourists delight to visit Strasbourg because of its many fine examples of medieval buildings. Its Cathedral is one of the finest specimens of Gothic architecture in the world. Gutenberg Platz is in the older part of the city and this statue serves to remind us that it was in Strasbourg Johann Gutenberg is said to have made his first experiments of printing with movable type. He lived in Strasbourg for nearly twenty-five years coming here from Mainz in Germany, his native town. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
