Texte au verso

7278 THE MILL, FARM OF MARIE ANTOINETTE, VERSAILLES As a royal residence, Versailles was associated only with Louis XIV and his two successors. Before his time it was but a small village. When Marie Antoinette, at the age of fifteen, was married to the French dauphin, afterwards Louis XVI, she came to live at Versailles. To be happy in the great and costly palace was impossible. As dauphine she hated the stiff manners of the court and longed for a free and simple life. When she became a queen she determined to escape from it. In the great park that surrounded the palace were two smaller palaces and gardens, the Grand Trianon and the smaller, but very delightful Petit Trianon. The Queen asked that this smallest one be given to her. Leaving form and fashion behind, she established here in miniature a little Swiss village. Here she did just as she pleased, entertaining only a very few of her near and close friends. The little village consisted of twelve cottages and there was a small farm stocked with cows, and hens. One of the farm buildings was the little mill you see. It was a real mill with a water wheel that could grind grain. One of the king's brothers used to dress as a miller and grind grain. Another would play the vil- lage schoolmaster. Marie Antoinette would dress as a dairy maid and attend to the milking and butter making. She kept hens, and in the little farmhouse would prepare breakfast with fresh-laid eggs and other products from her farm. She also worked as a gardener and with her own hands planted some poplar trees about the place. It is said some of these were still living just a few years ago. She was happy here, though the novelty of her venture later caused her much trouble. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
