The superb view of Constantinople witnessed on approaching it is dispelled when one finds himself actually in the midst of the narrow, dark and dirty streets of Galata, where travelers usually land. The tortuous streets and dilapidated houses with their filthy populace as seen in some parts of Galata and Stamboul, are in striking contrast with the stately mosques and palaces that are to be seen in other parts. But Constantinople is a city filled with discordant scenes, hence this feature does not appear to the traveler in greater contrast than many others. Some of the streets are very stony, which, were it not for the tram-cars, carriages or saddle-horses, would make a tour of the city very unpleasant. The subject of this view is called Yuksek Kaldirim (high pavement) or Step Street, which leads directly from Galata to Pera, having over 100 steps. Galata and Pera form the European section of the city: in Galata are the shops and warehouses of merchants, while Pera having a higher location and commanding view, is better adapted to residence purposes. Foreign ambassadors and wealthy Europeans have splendid mansions in Pera.
