V23922 CHUKIANG RIVER WITH ITS ENOR MOUS FLOATING POPULATION, CANTON, CHINA We are in tropical south-eastern China, in Canton and looking directly cast. The im mense territories of the Chinese Republic are at our left-an area of 4,218,401 square miles. Hongkong is 75 miles away, down at the mouth of the river, southeast of us, that is be fore us and at our right; and 600 miles still farther in the same direction as Hongkong lies Manila in the Philippines. The land on the right of the steamer is an island five or six miles long and beyond it is another broad affluent of the river. That island on the right bank is densely populated and forms an important suburb to the city of Canton which lies the north bank and ex tends several miles in every direction from our point of view. As far as our sight can reach, we see boats; these boats are the homes in which millions of Taper ici pour rechercher human beings have been born, have lived and have died; and in many cases without ever having set foot on land. It has been estimated that in these floating homes from 250,000 to 400,000 lives are daily rising and falling with the tide. The density of the population makes this necessary, for every available foot of land must be cultivated for food production. The houseboats range in size from fifteen feet to fifty and sixty feet in length. On many of them pigs and chickens are raised, and, in many cases when the smallness of the boat does not afford deck space for such stock a box or cage is suspended from the stern to serve as a pigpen or a chicken coop. For centuries the Chinese have used boats for dwellings, and, having a free anchorage, their building sites cost nothing. Copyright by The Keystone View Company
