We are looking southwest from the Hahnem-see toward Maloja at the head of that fartherlake. This is th esxtreme southeast part of Switzerland, near the frontiers of Austria and Italy. The lovely land of Tyrol is only sixty miles awatat our left, and Italy is just beyond those farthest mountains in the direction in whien we are now looking. The two lakes evidently were one not so very long ago, for the sand-bar dividing them shows on the very face of it that its origin is recent. It is the gradual accumulation of gravel torn c.f the mountain sides by grinding glaciers and worn to powder by being hurried along in the grasp of avalanches and mountain brooks. (The outlet of these lakes is into the Inn, leading down to the Danube.) The highest peak at the right is Lagrey. 10,400 feet high. That white patch on its slope is an enormous glacier which is gradually melt ing and draining off into streams that flow down behind the nearer dark bulk of a mountain, fin ally coming down into the nearer lake throu-h that valley which we see at the foot of the moun tain, just beyond those clustered houses of Silva plana that look so small far belore u or the shore. We see plainly right there how deposits of aand and gravel are gradually filling in the bed of the lake and forcing the waters to rett. not be so very many centuries before the bed of this valley will be made of green fields. Travel in winter and spring over the mountain passes hereabouts is a perilous undertaking. Thirty-foot telegraph posts are buried under the drifts, and horrible avalanches are likely to start at any time, carrying destruction with them. See Switzerland through the Stercoscope, with special "keyed" maps locating standpoints and identifying landmarks; published by Underwood & Underwood.
