We have come down fifteen miles from Naples, by the road which skirts the beautiful bay. Now we are standing in the western part of th excavated city of Pompeii, looking across to where Vesuvius sends up that sinister breath of smoke into the northern sky. Naples is at our north too, but also a little to the west, beyond the left-hand limits of our present vision. The shore of the Bay of Naples is only a mile away at our left. Nineteen hundred years ago, this bare and desolate oblong space was the heart of a busy, prosperous city. That building at the farther (N)end was a stately temple to Jupiter, and over behind was the shop of a wine-merchand ; his sculptured provision shop. Nearer to us, on the right, is the hall of the old-time wool-sellers. Here at this S. end were the city council halls, court-rooms and voting-rooms. In the palmy days of Pompeii this Forum was as full of life and animation as th Forum of Rome herself. Cicero had a country-house near here and without any doubt at all, he must have many times passed through this very square while by-standers discussed his latest oration and mothers said to their small boys : "Look well ; there goes the great Cicero !" In the year A.D. 79 a horrible eruption from the crater of Vesuvius yonder six miles away, suddenly and utterly overwhelmed the city, burying it more than fifteen feet deep under drifts of fiery ashes, stones and cinders. For a few years afterwards occasional efforts were made to excavate parts of the ruined city, but after a time its tale of terror was forgotten. The very fact of its existence here died out of men's memories. In 1748 a peasant accidentally discovered statuary lying embedded in the soil ; investigation led to research and now a large part of the buried town has been brought to light as we see it, after nearly 1900 years' oblivion.
