45 La Viga (Vee-gah) Canal is a means of intercourse be- tween the City of Mexico and outlying towns and villages on the shores of Lake Chalco and Xochimilco, extending to Lake Texcoco. It is ever a scene of busy traffic and mer- riment ; especially on Sundays and feast days, it is alive with crafts of all 'sorts and sizes, from the graceful gondo- las of Venetian style to the bulky flat bottomed boats with their cargoes of eveything anci anything. Here, like no- other place in Mexico, where the simple Mexican lives in pure primitive style, is portrayed the quaint and pecu- liar customs of the Aztecs, and a tour of the Republic is indeed incomplete without a, voyage on the Viga to the famous locations immediatly adjoining its course. The endless procession of fruit and vvegetable laden barges, and cargoes of imiscellaneous merchandise, present a spectacle of undying interest, especiallye when they are halted at the Garita de la Viga for receipt of city tax. 10828 Auf dem schönen Viga-Kanal dei Ixtacalco in Mexiko, in Mexiko.
