This is Nature’s great marvel on the north coast of Ireland. It is of volcanic origin, and is due to the same lava floods of the Tertiary era which formed the Isle of Staffa, with its famous Fingal’s Cave, off the coast of Scotland. The coast of Antrim, for miles in the vicinity of the Causeway, is formed of dark volcanic rocks, creating a line of wild and picturesque cliffs 400 or 500 feet high. The black basalt of the Causeway overlies snow-white chalk rocks and the contrast adds re- markably to the viariety and beauty of the scene. The basalt pillars of the Causeway are mostly hexagons, with a diameter of I5 or 20 inches, and as high as 20 feet. There are three Causeways, the Little, the Middle, and the Grand. The Grand Causeway is from 20 to 40 feet in breadth. It begins at the foot of the cliff and after running 150 yards or so turns and sinks into the sea. 12610 Il telaio, Stradone dei Giganti; Irlanda.
