10012. Geography - We are in southern Shropshire, one of the western counties of England, only a few miles from the easter border of Wales. These river waters have come mainly from brooks running down the Weldh mountains. They will join the Severn river near Worcester and enter the Atlantic by way of Bristol Channel. History - In old times a castle overlooking this valley was the home of a Lord President of Wales. Ling Charles I of England was entertained here. Milton wrote the fanciful masque called Comus for a festival held in the castle. The town in ancient times had a high wall around it for defence in war. That bridge over the river used to be guarded against the crossing of enemies. It was not until after hard fighting six hundred years ago and more (1275-82) that Wales was made to accept British rule, and in 1400 a Welsh rebellion made more trouble along the frontier as well as in Wales proper. Country life - The boys of Great Britain have a great many out-of-door games and sports. They are as enthusiastic over cricket as American boys over base-ball. Fishing, boating and swimming are enjoyed in a riverside region like this. Boys of prosperous fathers always learn to ride horseback. Almost every boy is interested in automobiles and seizes whatever chance there may be to learn how they are run. Some boys attend schools provided by the Government (not entirely free like American public schools but requiring small tuition fees) ; others are pupils in schools where larger fees are paid. There are no free high schools and no free universities like those in America, yet poor boys with real ability do manage work their way to the professions that require long and expensive training.
