Texte au verso

10208 The Casino from the Gardns, Monte Carto. Le Casino, vue des jardins, Monte Carlo. El Casino visto desde los Jardines, Monte Carlo. The miniature State of Monaco, (the Riviera. South East-ern France) is only two miles in length, while its width varies between a little more than a haIf_mile and 164 yards. Nevertheless it is an important place, for the greatest of the world's gaming houses is established at Monte Carlo, its capital. Its sovereign is the feeblest of European monarchs, and, in many respects, the principality of Monaco is only an independent fief. The Great European powers have come to an understanding to recognize this somewhat fictitious nationality, and have neutralized this happy corner of the earth, which is no more than a cosmopolitan winter garden, wher flowers and fruits of every country are displayed with a brilliant façade facing the sea. The Casino, at which we are looking directly, gives some idea, with ets setting of stately palms, of Monte Carlo's real beauty. To quote from the welle-known authority, M. Lentheric, "in front one sees marble steps surrounded by clusters of rose-trees and hedges of geraniums and cactus in flower, all shining in the sun like jewels on a chasuble. The place looks as though it were a permanent floral exhibition, and can be compared to nothing better than to an immense, unglazed hothouse, in which the trees and flowers vivified by the air and light have attained a most magnificient development. At certain hours of the day and of the night one could fancy oneself transported into one of those enchanted gardens that poets speak of, or on the threshold of one of the palaces of the Renaissance, listening to the joyous sounds of some festivity, or gazing on the brilliancy of its splendor." Monaco, like many towns on the Ligurian coast, enjoys a temperate climate; liable to very little change, which makes this pleasant Provençal country the most delightful winter resort one can imagine.
