1 15 The Forum from the Tower of the Capitol, Rome, Italy. Le Forum de la Tour du Capitole, Rome, Italie. El Foro de la Torre del Capitolio, Roma, Italie. Das Forum vom Turm des Kapitols aus, Rom, Italien. Forum sedd från tornet af Capitolium, Rom, Italien. From the clock-tower of the "Palace of the Senator" we are looking down upon the centre of ancient Rome, the Forum. This ancient market-place, confined by narrow streets and closely planted temples and other buildings, is in reality the birthplace of laws and institutions which still influence every western nation. But what was once an open square became encumbered with monuments, and is now so strewn with marble fragments that one sees at first everything but the Forum itself. Strictly speaking it was bounded by that narrow street on our right, the Sacred Way, and on the left by another arm of the same street, where are the deep pits of the recent excavations. At the further (southeast) end the Forum was bounded by the Temple of Julius Caesar, of which we may make out the massive foundations and a few steps, a little beyond those two broken columns recently set up by the Sacred Way. The tall fluted column is the Column of Phocas, erected in the beginning of the seventh century. To the right of the Sacred Way is the floor of the Basilica Julia, begun by Julius Cesar, to provide for lawcourts and an exchange. Beyond the basilica three columns of the Temple of Castor and Pollux rise from the dark mass of concrete foundation. Further to the right is an angle of the Palatine Hill with a part of the Palace of Caligula. Behind the columns was an ascent to the Palatine, recently uncovered. Near its foot, at the turn of the Sacred Way, is the circular foundation of the Temple of Vesta. Beyond the court of the House of the Vestals, on the left side of the Forum, are the remains of another basilica. In the distance the Colosseum, partly hidden by a church. To the right of this the Arches of Titus and Constantine. Almost at our feet are an angle of the Temple of Saturn (right) and of the Arch of Severus (left). See Baedeker's Central Italy. Hare's Walks in Rome. Lanciani's Ancient Rome, and Ruins and Excavations of Ancien Rome. Middleton's Remains of Ancient Rome.
