Solnedgång på det gamla Buddha-templet i Kiyomidzu, Kyoto, Japan. To reach this ancient temple we pass through a steep street, leading to the outskirts of the city. Throughout its entire length the street is lined with shops, where porcelain articles are sold, principally small sacred objects, as images of gods or votive ornaments. We reach at last at the end of the street a high, stone stairway, in front of which stands a two-storied red gateway, restored in 1897. The road then winds up the slopes of the hill, closely shaded by great pine-trees, past rows of stone lanterns, till we reach two pagodas of three stories, each bearing a large green bell. From the pagodas a colonnade leads to the main temple, in front of which stands a great bronze fountain and a belfry. The temple is really a cluster of buildings, so we shall stand on this platform, and look over at the main Temple. It was built in the 9th century in the time of the great general Tamura Maro, the Shogun who conquered the Ainos, who where then living in the central part of the Island of Hondo. The temple was built on the Shogun’s property, in the form of a palace, not in the usual temple-plan. It is about 190 feet long and 88 feet in width. The great platform in front was used for sacred dances, the musicians standing in the side wings. The temple is old and bare. Inside are rows of rough hewn wooden pillars, on which are bung a number of ancient paintings. The chief treasure is the Sacred Image of Kwannon, the goddess of the unhappy, who is worshipped here. It represents Kwannon with 11 faces and 1000 hands, to rescue suffering humanity, and stands in a shrine which is opened only once in 33 years. Beyond the gloomy temple stretches a lovely sunset view over to the mountain range, running west to the Straits of Shimonoseki. See C. L. Brownell’s The Heart of Japan.
