2526 The Choir of York Minster, York, England. Le chœur de la cathédrale, York, Angleterre. El coro de la catedral, Yorka, Inglaterra. Chor des Doms zu York, England. Koret, York domkyrka, York, England. Second in ecclesiastical importance to Canterbury alone, the Cathedral of York is architecturally its superior. Historically, as the seat of the archbishops of York, this old minster is one of the great churches of England, and reflects the older glories of the northern capital. Eburacum was the chief city of northern Britain in the days of Roman rule. Remote as it was from Rome, it was more than once the residence of an Emperor. Here Septimius Severus died; here also Constantius, the father of Constantine. When the Romans had gone (410) York retained its importance through the Saxon period. At the conversion of the Saxons York received in 627 its bishop,-successor after a long interval to the bishops of late Roman times. One church after another has occupied this site. The Norman cathedral, erected soon after the Conquest, gave place by degrees to the present structure, which thus shows several successive styles of architecture, dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, while the west front was not finished until 1472. The choir is in the so-called Perpendicular Gothic of the fourteenth century. Its chief feature is the great east window, 75 feet high, still retaining its medieval glass, in spite of the fire of 1829, which destroyed the choir stalls, with their beautiful carving, the altar-screen and the wooden vaulting. All has been since restored from the old designs. A flood of light pours in from broad traceried windows, filling the whole space from pier to pier. It is the fully developed Gothic construction, reducing walls to mere screens, and supporting the entire weight by piers and buttresses. In length this choir might serve for a church in itself, even without the nave. The entire length of the cathedral is 525 feet. See Baedeker's Great Britain.
