15634 PRAGUE, THE CAPITAL OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA Prague is the capital of one of the most important of the various new countries which emerged after the World War, to find a place on the map. Before the war it had been a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, but always alien and unsympathetic to the dominant authority that ruled from Vienna. The Germans of Austria and the Hungarians held control, though there were millions belonging to other nationalities in the realm. The Czechs of Bohemia, a Slav nation, the Moravians of Moravia, and the Slovakians of Slovakia were all Slavs and had many things in common. After the war these groups formed the new nation, which is called Czechoslovakia. Bohemia is one of the most densely populated parts of Europe, and besides rich agricultural land, it has many manufacturing industries such as textiles, glass, liquors and iron goods. The eastern part of the country, composed of Moravia and parts of Slovakia and Hungary, is more largely engaged in farming. The new country had thus a variety of industries and a dense and intelligent population. As a result it has made better progress since the war was over than any other power in Central Europe. Czechoslovakia at once settled down, has been well governed, and industries have been progressing at a rapid rate. The Czechoslovakians are regarded ad the most intelligent and most highly developed of all the Slavonic peoples. They have had the advantages of a well-forested, highly fertile country, and as a new nation much is expected from it in the development of a prosperous, happy land after centuries of oppression.
