V27604 SÃO JERONYMO MONASTERY, NEAR LISBON, PORTUGAL Out here in a western suburb of Lisbon, near the Tagus river, where you now see this marble closter and the sunshiny garden, there stood between four and five hundred years ago a sort of Seamen's Home, founded by Prince Henry the Navigator. That was in the old times when bold adventurers were setting out in many directions, "strange countries for to see," and in all such enterprises the Portuguese were leaders. Vasco da Gama spent here the last night on shore (July 8, 1497), before he started on the famous voyage which took the ships of white men for the first time around the southern end of Africa to India. King Emmanuel I of Portugal made a vow to build a monastery here on the sailor's return, if the voyage was successful, and the building you see now is the one actually constructed in fulfillment of that vow. More than half a century it took to complete the rambling pile of buildings into which the structure grew. For about three hundred years pious brothers of the old church lived and worked and prayed in this stately home. In a large church adjoining the monastery the royal builder, King Emmanuel, and several monarchs of his line lie buried, as well as da Gama himself. See what a wealth of fancy went into the designing of the carved pillars, the sculptured arches, and the balustrades. No doubt, while the workmen chiseled away at those stones, producing all that charming elaboration of detail, they gossiped over stories about the discoveries of Vasco da Gama and Columbus, stories of the fabulous wealth of India and of the strange people living in lands many weeks'sail westward from the Tagus over the mysterious Atlantic.
