Texte au verso
3866 Boating Scene in a Delightful Japanese Garden. Une promenade en canot dans un beau jardin japonais. Estes en un delicioso jardin japonés. Bootfahrt in einem reizenden japanischen Garten. Bätscen i en förtjusande japansk trädgärd; These bewitching Japanese girls have just returned from boating in this pretty lake, which is the chief attraction of a Japanese garden. No matter how small is the extend of the garden, water in some form, either a tiny lake, or a stream artfully led into miniature cascades, is made one of the principal features. Charming as these Japanese gardens are, most artistic in the arrangement of shrubs, rocks, trees and lovely vistas, they are thoroughly artificial - nothing is allowed to grow in Nature’s wild, untamed grace. Rigid rules govern the arrangement even to the minutest detail. The leading idea in gardening seems to be the reproduction on a small scale of some beautiful or noted landscape, or if the garden is an extensive one, like this at Hiroshima, of many much. Often the famous Fuji mountain is modelled in a tiny hall, only a few yards in height. In some gardens may be seen in miniature some lovely group of islands off the coast of Japan. Lakes are arranged in beautiful bays and inlets, bordered with artfully arranged stones and pebbles, the bans adorned with shrubs and closely clipped hushes, diversified here and there by trees dwarfed and twisted into shapes, rigidly prescribed by laws handed down for several hundred years. The choicest part of a garden in Japanese eyes is the stones, which are selected with the greatest care. Sometimes large sums, even as much as several hundred dollars, are given for stones of especial size and shape ; and often gardens are left unfinished for years till the required stone is found. In these formal landscape, gardens flowers are rarely seen. These the Japanese plant elsewhere in great beds, flaming with color, like the Iris-beds in the Hori-Kiri Garden, which are like a torrent of violet, mauve, Lila, white or red. Or they train their lovely wistarias on trellises, from which hang showers of violet blossoms. See E. S. Morse’s Japanese Homes and their Surroundings. H. Finck’s Lotus Time in Japan.
